Literacy

For this project, I learned a lot of different decoding strategies to teach young readers.  I also learned a lot of comprehension & fluency best practices.  As a culmination of my learning I worked with a struggling student over a period of 6 weeks, planning lessons to meet her needs.  I then wrote an analysis of her skills and progress.  This was a great project because it was real-world application of these strategies for struggling readers.

This showcase is a culmination of some of the projects and coursework that I completed throughout my time in the Masters of Arts in Education at Michigan State University.  My areas of focus in my course selection involved literacy and technology.  Below you will find links to some of my work that is organized into three categories.  The first category  involves coursework about literacy; such as reading strategies work, a student literacy analysis, and writing.  The next section contains work tied to meaningful technology integration in the classrooms.  The last area will contain coursework relating to leadership in education, as this is a more recent special interest of mine.  I hope this helps to paint a picture of the well-rounded educational experience I have had with this program and how it applies to my current positions.

Literacy

For this project, I learned many different decoding strategies to teach young readers. I have since referred to many of these strategies as I am conferring with students and working with them in guided reading groups.

I chose to be a part of a book study on the book "Inside Information".  This book was about integrating project based learning with informational reading.  This was a lot of fun to read and talk about this book with my colleagues, as well as to give me an opportunity to reflect on how I might integrate what I learned into my own classroom practices.  I was inspired by this book to use this approach to a social studies unit in 1st grade on our school community.  We have since revamped many units in the curriculum that integrate PLB to informational reading in meaningful and engaging ways.

The last area will contain coursework relating to leadership in education, as this is a more recent special interest of mine.  I learned a lot about what it means to be a leader, leadership styles, and the type of leader I want to be.  I also learned that leadership can take place in the classroom and at the building level each day for me.  I hope this helps to paint a picture of the well-rounded educational experience I have had with this program and how it applies to my current positions.

Technology

During this project I was learning about some new media technology and tools.  I was able to use these new tools as I created an interactive unit on How-to Writing (procedural writing) for my 1st graders.  This was used by all of my colleagues and was engaging & enhanced the learning experience for my writers.  I also have since moved many of my lessons to digital formats such as these because I saw the level of engagement rise.

This was an infographic that I created that had links to videos, apps, websites and resources that could help teachers to connect with resources in the area of new media technology and tools to enhance instruction.  This infographic became a resource for other first grade teachers in the district because it told the story of revamping the unit, while also linking them to various resources and videos that are not available by simply opening the teachers manual.

For this project, I revamped a social studies unit on school communities and created an EdPuzzle video for students to watch & take a quiz on using EdPuzzle that is all about our school secretaries.  The students were able to make connections between the jobs of the secretaries and other school community workers. This served as technology integration and a formative assessment.  I started using EdPuzzle as a formative assessment for students to do more often because they absolutely loved it.  It also gave me great information about what my kids understood from the video.

Leadership

For this assignment, I was given a case about a school district that was struggling to implement a new plan of action for technology integration in the school system. First, I analyzed the case and broke down the problems that I saw.  Then, I came up with a plan of action that I would use to help bring this district along in the area of technology integration.  This included a plan for involving parents, professional development for teachers, and continuing to find meaningful purpose for technology use in the classroom.  I was really proud of this work because I think it would be a great plan of action in my own district, as well.

During this assignment, I was able to learn about different leadership styles.  The assignment was to take on the role of each leadership style and compose a tweet for the different scenarios.  Not only did this help me to understand these different leadership styles better, but it also helped me to get to a clear vision of the type of leaders that  want to be.  I was able to see pros and cons of each style and it has made me more aware of the way I lead & want to lead in the future.
